About The Woodbridge Inn
The Woodbridge is situated on the banks of the River Severn, a mile downstream from Ironbridge in Shropshire, and is named after the wooden bridge that once connected the pub to the village of Coalport on the opposite bank. The pub was built at the same time as the bridge, in around 1785.
The name “Woodbridge” comes from the bridge adjacent to the pub which connects the parish of Brosley on the south bank of the river and Sutton Maddock on the north bank. Architect and bridge builder William Hayward designed the bridge, which was the first crossing of the Severn at Coalport. His scheme encompassed two timber-framed arches built on stone abutments and a pier, and was opened in 1780.
The Woodbridge offers a warm welcome with friendly staff and good food. There are lots of interesting corners and nooks to squirrel away in, or more open, buzzy areas if you’re in a more gregarious mood. They have a substantial raised deck at first floor level to provide an outside drinking and eating area overlooking the river, and a sunny garden room which also looks out over the river with further dining space.
